Registration Rules for Basic Calculus 1, 2 and Basic Natural Sciences courses

♦ Purpose

These courses are given to first-year students to help them keep up with college mathematics or natural sciences courses. More specifically, these courses are geared towards students who lack understanding of high school mathematics, or had few opportunities to study a particular field of sciences in high school.

♦ Course Name

Basic Calculus 1, Basic Calculus 2, Basic Physics 1, Basic Physics 2, Basic Chemistry 1, Basic Chemistry 2, Basic Biology 1, Basic Biology 2 (1 credit each)

♦ Course Eligibility

- Basic Calculus 1, 2: Those students who scored below the cut-off point on their mathematical achievement test

- Basic Physics 1, 2: About 150 freshmen applicants who should take Physics 1 but did not study Physics 2 in high school are elected.

- Basic Chemistry 1, 2: About 100 freshmen applicants who should take Chemistry 1 but did not study Chemistry 2 in high school are elected.

- Basic Biology 1, 2: About 100 freshmen who should take Biology 1 but did not study Biology 2 in high school are elected.

♦ Course Details

Undergraduate teaching assistants will assign major-related work to groups of about 5 students to complete once or twice a week for two hours. Students will receive an S/U for a final grade.

♦ Course Enrollment

Students are placed in Basic Calculus 1, 2 based on their score from the mathematical achievement test. On the other hand, basically any student is able to enroll for Basic Physics 1, 2, Basic Chemistry 1, 2, and Basic Biology 1, 2.  However, course registration can be limited when there are too many applicants for a course.

Basic Calculus 1 (033.016), Basic Physics 1 (034.012), Basic Chemistry 1 (034.025), and Basic Biology 1 (034.034) are held in the spring semester to help those first-year students who lack understanding of high school mathematics or who have had few opportunities to study particular field of sciences in high school. To keep up with college mathematics or natural sciences courses, first-year students may take more than 1 credit worth of these courses. (However, this is not the case for Basic Calculus 2, Basic Physics 2, Basic Chemistry 2, and Basic Biology 2 courses that are held in the fall semester.)
